Inspiration Journey

A three day inspiration journey on IT business alignment, agile and BizDevOps working.

As a transport company, HTM is responsible for public transport by tram and bus in the The Hague region. To improve their services, be more agile and develop digital solutions that meet the needs of their customers (and internal end users), HTM wants to promote the cooperation between IT and business and adopt an agile way of working. Ultimately, HTM wants to gradually make the transition to BizDevOps working. But: “Where do you start? And what does this require of leadership and organizational culture and structure?” To find the answers to these questions and take the next step in agile working, we went on an Inspiration Journey. With an Inspiration Journey, we looked behind the scenes at different companies and learned from their experiences in IT business alignment, agile and BizDevOps working.

Approach

To kick-start HTM’s journey to agile and BizDevOps working, we organized an Inspiration Trip for a diverse group of executives and managers. After an extensive discovery phase, we created a customized program with inspiring speakers from organizations such as ProRail, Stedin and Schiphol. Experts from various organizations shared their insights as well as their lessons learned and provided valuable discussions.

During the Inspiration Journey, the inspiration we gained was continuously translated to the context of HTM. With sharp reflection, new insights were gained and ideas were challenged and improved. At the end of the journey we defined practical actions to take the next step towards agile and BizDevOps working. To secure the lessons learned, an inspiration booklet was created with a summary of each speaker and key insights.

Result

As a result of the Inspiration Journey, HTM is able to take the next step in agile and BizDevOps working. By learning from other companies that have already gone through (or are in the process of going through) this transition, HTM was able to define a shared vision and practical actions to move forward.

The Inspiration Journey led to, among other things:

  • Insight into what steps other companies have taken towards becoming an agile organization and improve IT-business alignment, how these companies have been (re)structured, what roles have been adopted and how agile and BizDevOps are being implemented;
  • An acceleration in the implementation of BizDevOps working through a shared view on direction to follow and actions to take;
  • Outside-in inspiration for the short and long term;
  • A first step in IT-business alignment in practice, as both IT and operations were present and became enthusiast during the journey.

“In the search for a way of working that suits us, it was very helpful to become inspired by the drive and ideas of other companies: what brought them a step forward and what made the difference. Digital Shapers facilitated that for us in an excellent way.”
